Rod Tinson has written a Halloween play which was to be staged at Pendennis Castle in Falmouth. The play featured scenes from different periods in the castle's history (including World War II, when it was a coastal defence position against the threat of German invasion).
Unfortunately for Mr Tinson, he had to get his script approved by English Heritage.
Can you guess what happened next children?
Yes, that's right, they took exception to a number of things and wanted him to make adjustments; eg to the part where a young Jewish character expressed fears about his family in occupied Poland.
For why?
English Heritage were concerned that people would be "offended" by the material, and that it would be "inappropriate" for an English Heritage audience.
Aren't Polish or Jewish people allowed to be part of our heritage then?
The censorship is rather odd really, given that Mr Tinson wrote the play for adults (it was for an adults only evening), many of whom would remember the War or know people who were involved in it.
English Heritage also had other issues:
- any references to sex (including buggary (sic)....their misspelling, not mine)
- swear words, including 'bloody' (a fine English swear word, used in "In Which We Serve")
- references to Poland, Jews and Nazis
Given the number of brave Poles and Jewish people who joined the RAF, RN and Army and the number of Polish war memorials in the UK, I would think that they would be more than "offended" at having references to their country/religion removed from the play.
BTW, the castle is also home to a collection of wartime cartoons of Hitler and Mussolini by illustrator George Butterworth.

Anyhoo, Mr Tinson did what any self respecting writer would do, he told English Heritage to stuff it (not literally) and withdrew his services as a writer.

It never ceases to amaze me how dictatorships, especially Communist ones, always want to alter history to suit their own political agendas.
ReplyDeleteThese people learned a long time ago that to control a population you must control the education system and what gets taught and you must control the media and what gets broadcast; sadly for the EUSSR and the global socialists and their one world government agenda, the internet allows the people to partly decide what is broadcast. The EUSSR hates the internet and have had a couple of goes at contolling it, we must resist this. I read yesterday that China are cracking down on people that spread rumours and lies on-line, I suspect had we had China Nanny in this country, Ken would soon dissappear one night along with many others of us.

ReplyDeleteI imagine that when all references to Nazis, Jews and Poland have been removed, there probably isn’t much left in the WW2 section. Nothing that would make much sense anyway.
ReplyDeleteI understand that schools no longer teach children about this important event either.
Of course, this was to be just a small production for a small audience. But next year England will have a global audience of billions for the Olympic Games where, I am led to believe, there will be no reference to England having any kind of military history at all.
There will be no Red Arrows fly past, and the opening ceremony will have no military displays, marching bands or anything else that might suggest that we have any sort of military to be proud of.
Instead there will be a demonstration to the World of how ‘cool’ we have become by being so accommodating and multicultural.
Forget history = Repeat history.
ReplyDeleteWith EU on the ascendancy to a final take-over of Europe and UK completely, then history of the past must be allowed to creep back in while the dumbed down masses will be unaware it has been brewing all along.
Better to take them by surprise and at a certain level of indoctrinated youth in the country who will have no knowledge of the past what-so-ever, then the take-over will be complete and none the wiser.
Ignorance is knowledge.
War is peace.
Slavery is freedom.
Nobody will know the difference, so nobody will complain.
Simples.
If it wasn't for the bravery and selflessness of those who fought in WW2,including Polish people, Nanny and her minions, including English heritage, wouldn't even exist! Generally, I do support organisations such as English Heritage, who do much good work in preserving our past, which is why I find it surprising (and very disappointing) that they are following such a policy.
